Larry Brown Files for County Commission
May 5, 2008
Las Vegas City Councilman Larry Brown filed today for election to the County Commission in District C. The current commissioner, Chip Maxfield, announced late last year he will not be seeking re-election.
Brown, a City Councilman since 1997, said he is excited for the challenge and ready to apply all he has learned to an even larger constituency.
"Almost all of my council ward is located in District C, so there will be a lot of familiar faces," he said. "A lot of the other areas used to be in my Ward before re-districting, so I know the challenges this area is facing and the things that need to be done to make it an even better place to live."
Known as a fiscal watchdog who scrutinizes budgets and gets the most out of every tax dollar, Brown said he will continue to be a fiscal conservative as a County Commissioner.
"With these uncertain economic times, now more than ever we need our government to tighten its belt and look at how money is being spent," he said. "My record shows I've been able to balance the need for parks and recreational venues against being accountable to the taxpayers."
Brown fought hard to get more athletic fields and parks in the city, and was instrumental in the creation of soccer and youth sports complexes like Bettye Wilson and Kellog-Zaher. As a member of the Regional Transportation Commission, he's also worked to reduce gridlock and provide mass transit alternatives for residents.
"So much of what we do at the City is similar to what is done at the County, so I'll be ready from day one to continue effectively representing the residents of this district," Brown said. "Commissioner Maxfield and I worked on numerous projects together, so I'm extremely familiar with operations at the County."
Larry and his wife, Celeste, have three children attending schools in Clark County.
